Choosing a Rifle for the Range

For a range rifle, I would first ask what kind of shooting you plan to do. Paper targets at a nearby range, informal plinking and precision practice all point to slightly different priorities.

Match the rifle to the range

Check the range’s rules before you buy. Some ranges limit calibers, ammunition types, muzzle devices or target distances. A rifle that fits the facility and the kind of practice you enjoy will get used more often.

For a first rifle, many people look at a .22 LR because it can be economical to practice with and has relatively mild recoil. Others want a centerfire rifle for a particular distance or purpose. Think about ammunition price and availability as part of the rifle’s cost, not an afterthought.

Pay attention to fit and recoil

A stock that is too long or too short can make a rifle uncomfortable to shoulder. Check the length of pull, cheek position, controls, weight and balance. If you can handle an unloaded example, see whether it feels natural rather than assuming you will adapt to it later.

Recoil depends on the cartridge, rifle weight and stock design. A lighter rifle is easier to carry, but may feel sharper during a long range session. A little more weight can make practice more comfortable. Compare the options with your real use in mind.

Budget for the full setup

Include a safe or secure storage solution, eye and ear protection, ammunition, and any optics or accessories you actually need. If a scope is part of your plan, read our optics guide for the basic comparison points, then browse current optics.

Take a look at rifles in the online store and compare the models that fit your range rules, budget and practice goals. For general field use, see choosing a general-purpose rifle.
